Here we have a BMW 535i with the ultra rare trunk prop rod option shown.

Replacing those damn things on the E34 is not a fun task. I can fully understand the use of the prop rod, especially if it’s just an old car and not something special to the owner. OK, I was in California when I changed mine, but if I had to do it in the snow, well, I’d probably use a prop rod as well, at least for a few months.

This obviously never would have happened if they had used good over-engineered gas struts to support the trunk lid instead of those terrible luggage crushing gooseneck things.

I call them hockey stick hinges.

We get so many cars through the body shop that have their trunks pushed up at the front from someone crushing them onto whatever they have in the trunk.

They switched to that design on the E39 for 5 series, e36 for 3 series and e38 for 7 series
